More from the Mummer's Parade in Philly

So one of my New Year's Resolutions is to take fewer pictures. That's right, to shoot less. I took over 40,000 photos last year, and while I've got a ton of hard drive space I don't have a ton of time to really go through them. There are probably some nice photos in there that will never see the light of day simply because I don't have the time for the. That goes for prior years too.

The goal this year is to bring more photos to light by taking fewer of them. There's an old quote attributed to Mark Twain, "I didn't have time to write you a short letter, so I wrote you a long one." How true that is of photography as well.

So here's to fewer photos and more editing in 2013! I'll dance to that!

Fight Like a Girl @ 2013 Mummer's Parade in Philly

Fight Like a Girl

I've been ultra-conservative with my exposures lately underexposing by as much as a stop to prevent blowing out highlight. Of course there are situations where you have to in order to get a properly exposed subject, but as good as the dynamic range and the latitude is of the K-5, recovering important highlights that have fallen off the histogram often looks off.

I'm reasonably happy with this next set, considering that they wore white and pink. That's a tough color combination to handle, with the pinks threatening to go nuclear and the whites threatening to blow out and turn into a unmitigated patch of 255,255,255.

Scenes from the 2013 Mummer's Parade (from Ugly Women to Pretzels)

The Pentax K-5 and DA* 50-135 have been neglected lately, as I've opted for the smaller and lighter cameras with smaller sensors when I need reach. But it's good to bring out the (comparatively) big gear once in a while and give it a workout. And for the most part, it doesn't disappoint. AF is still a touch slow with some OOF shots, but the IQ is hard to beat. THe DA*50-135 really does produce prime-like IQ.

It felt good to be out again shooting after a late fall/early winter holed up at home for no apparent reason. Felt a little rusty, to be honest, but that's ok.
